This is the second in a series of video profiles of Project 19 composers created by women filmmakers. Carolina Méndez's profile of Tania León takes the viewer inside the composition process of her new work, “Stride,” written in memory of Susan B. Anthony.
As an Afro-Cuban Latina composer working in the United States, Tania León is a unique voice in contemporary classical music. She brings the traditions of her youth into her music for ensembles around the world. "Working among different traditions is about being members of the planet," says León. "We’re all from the same planet. We haven’t left this planet yet."
This round table discussion focuses on the history and currency of the realities facing women composers. Chaired by Julia Wolfe, the intergenerational participants reflect on their shared heritage as female composers—a lineage in which they are defining members. Participating composers include Zosha Di Castri, Tania León, Missy Mazzoli, Jessie Montgomery, Laura Schwendinger, and Joan Tower.
